Is your drone ready for spring? Three important things to check before you fly

Spring is a favourite season for drone enthusiasts – the days are longer, nature is coming alive and the flying world is becoming more stable. But before you take your drone aloft for the first time since winter, it’s worth making a few simple but essential checks. That way you’ll avoid unpleasant surprises and ensure a safe flying experience.

1. Check the battery status

If your drone has been idle for a long time, battery health is particularly important.

  • Is the battery charging properly?
  • Will the battery last as long as before or will it drain faster?
  • Is the battery physically puffy, cracked or hot?

If the answer is yes to any of these questions, the battery should be replaced – a flat battery can be a fire hazard and is definitely not suitable for flying.

Tip: Don’t charge your battery completely from zero just before take-off – it’s best to keep it between ~60-80% if you don’t plan to fly immediately.

2. Check the propellers

Propellers can become dusty, warped or even micro-fragmented over the winter. Before the first flight:

  • Check that the propellers are not cracked or bent.
  • Make sure that the fastening clips work and lock properly.
  • Clean or replace if necessary – propellers are low in cost but have a big impact on safety.

Bonus: It’s always worth taking spare propellers with you, just in case!

3. Update your software

There’s nothing worse than being in the middle of a beautiful place and discovering that a drone or an app needs an update.

  • Check for updates from DJI Fly (or other apps)
  • Make sure the drone firmware is up to date
  • Also check the software of the controller and the card’s clearance.

A software upgrade is not just about new features – it also improves security and fixes bugs.

Every flight starts on the ground – and spring is the perfect time to give your drone a proper ‘health check’. If you want your drone to serve you well all season, start responsibly.
