What’s new with DJI OM 5?
The OM 5 is the fifth release in the Osmo Mobile range of smartphone stabilizers from major manufacturer DJI(Da-Jiang Innovations). The product uses 3-axis stabilisation technology, which was originally designed for drones to make drone shots smoother, but was later applied to hand-held products as well. The OM 5 has some notable improvements over its predecessor, including:
- new phone clip (with light, sold separately)
- a more compact design (it’s smaller and lighter than previous Osmo Mobile series handhelds).
- built-in extension arm
- new ShotGuides
- enhanced ActiveTrack 4.0

Who is the DJI OM 5 for?
For the most part, DJI is targeting a growing generation of people who use smartphones on a daily basis – whether that’s a vlogger or someone just trying to give as much as they can to friends and family through better quality footage during video calls.
It’s a product for people looking for something portable and compact to throw in a backpack for a long hike, for example, and later use to take epic snapshots on nstagram.
The price of €159 is almost the same as the price of the OM 4 (€149) when it was released in October 2020. However, it is several times lower than the original price point of the Osmo Mobile in September 2016 – €299.
With a battery life of 6.4 hours, the product can even last a whole weekend, trip or hike on a single charge. Another good feature is that it can be used as a battery bank in case your smartphone battery starts to run down.
“Whether you’re travelling, video calling friends and family, or recording your daily activities, the DJI OM 5 is the perfect companion for all of life’s adventures,” says DJI in a statement.

Creating videos
A big advantage of the OM 5 is the high-quality 3-axis gimbal technology that users of previous versions of Osmo Mobile are already familiar with. But this version has some new features that will make your videos much smoother.
The new ShotGuides feature is designed for videographers and offers up to 30 sets of preset shooting tutorials and supports automatic editing of clips into a single, complete video.
DJI has also updated ActiveTrack 4.0 mode to allow tracking of subjects at up to 3x zoom at 5 m/s. The OM 5 can accurately detect and consistently track a focused subject in the frame, even when it is in motion.
The OM 5 is also capable of other pre-programmed shooting modes that were available on its predecessors, including:
- Gesture control: start and stop recording video or take pictures to control DJI OM 5 with hand gestures (no timer needed)
- DynamicZoom: DJI OM 5 automatically adjusts the zoom function to create a dramatic, Alfred Hitchcock-inspired background zoom.
- Timelapse: show the passage of time in fast motion.
- Motionlapse: this takes time and adds motion points to the gimbal.
- Hyperlapse: move physically with the gimbal for a selected period of time.
- Panoramas: the three panorama options include a 3×3 panorama, a 240° panorama and a “CloneMe” panorama, which allows the user to add multiple versions of a person or object to a single shot.
- Spin Shot Gimbal Movement: activated in the DJI Mimo app and using the joystick, the gimbal rotates the phone to create a spinning effect.
- Story mode templates: for quick videos, choose one of the preset motions, music and colour palette.
- Glamour effects: supports automatic retouching and custom parameter settings. Glamour effects are automatically activated when the front camera is switched on.
