DJI Osmo Pocket 3: A pocket-sized vlog camera that surprises with its capabilities

The Osmo Pocket series has always been a niche product, offering compact design, smooth video and decent image quality. Three years on from the Pocket 2, DJI has introduced the Osmo Pocket 3, which brings significant innovations. The biggest changes are a 1-inch sensor that improves image quality, especially in low light, and a larger rotating screen. In addition, the Pocket 3 offers 4K 120p shooting, 10-bit D-LogM mode for better dynamic range, faster autofocus and more.

Pocket 3 is small and easy to use, with a stabilised 3-axis gimbal that keeps shots smooth and stable. The camera is 14 cm long and weighs 179 grams, making it slightly larger than the Pocket 2. The large 16:9 2-inch screen rotates sideways and pans the camera accordingly, allowing you to film in both horizontal and vertical modes.

The new 1-inch 9.4MP sensor is nearly three times the size of the Pocket 2, offering better image quality. The 20mm fixed lens has a relatively fast f/2.0 aperture, but is perhaps not ideal for portraits or product shots. There are two physical buttons on the camera, a record and gimbal control, and the battery lasts 135 minutes (up to 240 minutes with the extra battery grip).

The Mimo app is no longer a necessity, as most functions are available directly from the camera screen. The Pocket 3 is available separately for €539 or as a Creator Combo bundle for €679, which includes extras such as an extra battery grip and wireless microphone.

Osmo Pocket 3 is designed to deliver smooth and stable video. The camera is easy to use by pointing the lens and leaving stabilisation and focus to the gimbal and autofocus. The camera has three modes: tracking, tilt lock and FPV mode.

Image quality is excellent for a pocket camera, especially compared to smartphones. The Pocket 3 is capable of shooting 4K at 60 fps, with 10-bit D-LogM and HDR. A new low-light mode improves low-light performance.

All in all, the Osmo Pocket 3 is a great vlogging tool, offering smooth video and good sound quality. The Pocket 3 is well suited for those who focus on cinematic shots, but it’s not the best choice for portraits and product photography.
