It’s hard to find a 360-degree camera that’s as versatile as the Insta360 X4. This pocket-sized adventure camera offers 8K video, 4K slow motion, single lens mode up to 4K at 60 frames per second, a rugged and weatherproof body, 360-degree horizon lock, exceptionally effective stabilisation and a wide range of creative shooting styles that a standard phone camera simply can’t deliver.
360°, action, vlogging, behind-the-scenes footage, on-board camera – whatever category your needs fall into, X4 is ready. With an invisible selfie stick that disappears from the video image and creates a third-person perspective, it’s the perfect addition to your smartphone.
8K video that changes the whole game
The most striking innovation compared to the Insta360 X3 is the 8K video. Compared to the previous 5.7K resolution, 8K offers a lot more detail – and when we’re talking about frames that cover the entire surroundings, it’s noticeable. The more pixels, the more you can crop, rotate, zoom – without losing sharpness.
It’s not just a technical indicator – it gives the content creator the freedom to create, making the creative work more flexible and of higher quality. What’s more, this higher performance translates down to lower resolutions – 5.7K video can now be recorded at up to 60 frames per second and 4K video at up to 100 frames per second. In single-lens mode, 4K video can be recorded at up to 60fps, whereas the previous model was limited to 30 frames.

Durable, portable and user-friendly
The design of the X4 is similar to the X3 – a good thing, as the X3 was already one of the most user-friendly 360° cameras on the market. The body has a comfortable grip, it’s light but firm in the hand. A threaded mount at the bottom allows the camera to be attached to a variety of accessories, from tripods to selfie sticks.
The new screw-on lens caps are much more usable than the X3’s non-usable clips. They are clear, lightweight and easy to remove – and given the camera’s over-pressure lenses, protection is essential.
The camera is waterproof up to 10 metres, with rubber grips on all connections. If any of the gaskets are not properly sealed, an orange mark is visible inside the locking mechanism – a simple but clever safety feature.
A battery that lasts
The Insta360 X4’s new battery packs a whopping 2290 mAh, which means up to 135 minutes of continuous recording. That’s 67% more than the 81 minutes offered by the X3. The long recording time is especially important for 8K video, which is technically demanding.
The camera automatically shuts down the screen and processor when they’re not needed, helping to conserve battery power during extended shooting, such as in Timelapse mode. If needed, the camera can be charged directly on the move via USB-C.
User interface and management
Using the camera is intuitive and quick. The touchscreen display makes it easy to change settings and monitor framing in real time. There are only four physical buttons: on/off, record, mode change and quick settings – all other controls are on-screen.
When the camera is attached to a selfie stick or otherwise away from the body, voice or gesture control can be used. “Start recording” or a peace of mind gesture – both work as expected. This feature is really useful when recording in the water or alone.
Video modes and creative flexibility
The X4 offers a rich range of recording options that go beyond simple 360° recording:
- Bullet Time – the camera spins above you, you’re the centre of the action.
- Timelapse – ideal for a night-time transition or a city view
- Hyperlapse – Acceleration with motion
- MeMode – camera automatically keeps you in focus
- FreeFrame – choose horizontal or vertical format in the final video itself
All video modes are supported with powerful FlowState stabilisation and 360° horizon lock. So whether you’re skiing down a mountain, walking a hiking trail or riding a motorbike, you’ll get smooth, professional-looking footage.
Conclusion: is the X4 worth the investment?
Insta360 X4 has already proven itself as the market leader in a year. Its 8K video, 360° frame flexibility, large battery and intuitive operation make it the most powerful portable camera for the content creator or adventurer. Whether you want to make memorable travel videos, create professional social media content or document sporting moments, the X4 gives you more freedom, quality and control.
