Insta360 has launched a new flagship: the Insta360 X5. Compared to its predecessor, the X4, the new model offers significantly improved image quality and sound, and takes 360° video and photo creation to an even higher level.
The Insta360 X4 was already a very strong product, and one that could have been expected to be successful for a long time. Now, however, the Insta360 X5, with its small but significant improvements, has managed to create a camera that feels even more complete and professional. Externally, the X5 and X4 look quite similar – dimensions, weight and shape are almost identical. A few details and, of course, the new model name on the front hint that this is the next generation.
It’s good to see that Insta360 hasn’t changed the successful formula, but has focused on exactly those areas where there is most room for improvement.
The most significant change is the camera’s new 1/1.28-inch sensors, which are 144% larger than those on the X4. The larger sensor means significantly better light gathering, more detailed images and better performance in more challenging lighting conditions such as low light. Three powerful image processing chips work in tandem with the sensors to improve image quality, reduce noise and increase sharpness.
In addition, X5 has received a very important practical improvement: the lenses are now more scratch-resistant and replaceable if necessary. If the lens does become damaged, there’s no need for expensive repairs – you can simply replace the damaged lens yourself, saving both time and money.
Early reviews and tests suggest that the X5 offers highly detailed and colourful images, extended dynamic range and better performance in lower light. Videos recorded at 5.7K 60fps in HDR mode or 8K 30fps without HDR look very sharp and vibrant. Files are ready to share on social media without the need for major post-processing.
Significant technical progress has also been made. The junction between the two lenses is almost invisible, lens flare has been reduced, and Insta360’s notoriously invisible selfie stick remains professionally hidden.
In terms of sound quality, the Insta360 X5 has been upgraded with a new built-in steel mesh windscreen and a software ‘Voice Enhancement’ mode that improves the sound of vlogs and outdoor recordings. Based on initial tests, the sound remains audible in windy conditions, but it’s not too distracting.
Some user experiences have also highlighted some practical observations: the battery drains faster in 8K recording mode, and working in connection with a smartphone (e.g. iPhone 13) can also put a significant strain on the device. This is only natural given the intensive processing and high data volume, but it’s worth taking into account.
