DJI Flip: a new generation of drone for beginners

The innovative design of the first drone of its kind makes it the ideal choice for vlogging as well as everyday aerial photography.

The DJI Flip is an interesting newcomer to the world of drones, offering features suitable for beginners and slightly more experienced users alike. Its foldable design and multi-functional capabilities are aimed at vloggers, social media creators and those who want to capture unique views in comfort and safety. At the same time, the image quality and flight performance of the Flip falls slightly short of the DJI Mini 4 Pro, which is primarily geared towards high quality camera work, offering greater dynamic range and 4K 100fps filming.

Pros and cons

DJI Flip – design and user experience

The DJI Flip stands out with its first-ever folding propeller guards, which provide additional safety, especially for those flying in crowded places or indoors. The guards not only increase the safety of the drone, but also allow for palm take-off and landing. This means that mats and special landing sites are unnecessary – drones can be flown almost anywhere where it is legal and safe to do so.

The Flip is taller in design than the DJI Mini series drones, giving it a unique look. When folded up, the drone resembles a science fiction spaceship, and when unfolded it resembles a mix of an FPV Cinewhoop drone and a classic camera drone.

The flying experience is smooth, but wind resistance is not its strong point. Maximum speed reaches up to 43 km/h (in Sport mode), but in strong winds the drone slows down considerably. In quiet conditions, on the other hand, the Flip is stable enough for beginners as well as those who want advanced vlogging features.

Camera performance and features designed for vlogging

Flip is aimed at vlogging and social media content creators, offering the ability to record videos in horizontal and vertical formats. While the vertical video is cropped from the horizontal sensor, it’s sufficient for vlogging and works well for things like TikTok and Instagram.

The camera itself is equipped with a 1/1.3-inch sensor, offering 12MP and 48MP photo formats and up to 4K 60fps video recording. In addition, you can choose the D-Log M profile, which is suitable for advanced users who want to colour correct their videos for later editing. Images are of decent quality – sharp in the centre but a little softer around the edges.

Is the DJI Flip right for you?

If you’re a beginner looking for an affordable drone with features designed for vlogging and simple aerial photography, the DJI Flip is a great choice. Its safety-focused design, versatile controls and social media-friendly features are definitely strong pluses.

However, if you need a drone primarily for capturing high-quality footage or want greater manoeuvrability, the DJI Mini 4 Pro is a better choice. However, the Flip remains a beginner-oriented drone that offers good value for money, especially for vloggers and social media creators.
